RTE, the French electricity transmission system operator, is firmly committed to supporting the energy transition. Its project for the development of the electricity grid by 2035, called the “Ten-year grid development plan”, aims to renovate the grid, adapt it to the guidelines of France’s future Multi-annual Energy Programming (MEP) and to the evolution of the energy mix in neighbouring countries, while making maximum use of existing lines. The associated investments require 33 billion euros over 15 years, including 2.9 billion euros for the modernization of its digital framework. The 10-year plan underlines the importance of smart grids, the development of which “is now seen as an alternative to traditional production and network infrastructures”.
In accordance with the provisions of the law, RTE is responsible for drawing up a 10-year network development plan. This 10-year plan, built in consultation with all stakeholders in the sector, is submitted to the Minister of Ecological and Solidarity Transition, the Energy Regulatory Commission and the Environmental Authority.
The ” Ten-year network development plan” (SDDR) proposed by RTE will make it possible to renovate the network and adapt it to the guidelines of the future Multi-annual Energy Programming (MEP) and to the evolution of the energy mix in neighbouring countries, while making the most of existing lines.
In total, RTE plans to invest 33 billion euros from equity by 2035, or about 2 billion euros per year in the next decade compared to 1.3 billion euros today.
