ENTSOE-E, the pan-European association of electricity network operators is in the process of finalising a series of joint projects. Work has started on a “central platform” for data exchange between national and regional grid operators, the Common Grid Model and Operational Planning Data environment (CGM-OPDE). The platform will be fully operational in 3 to 5 years, according to Laurent Schmitt, ENTSOE-E Secretary General. The total investment is said to amount to several tens of millions of euros, financed by network operators across Europe. The platform will constitute the “core business” of daily electricity exchanges and real-time market operations, crucial for managing the growing volumes of electricity from intermittent renewable sources. “The CGM-OPDE platform is in fact a kind of App Store for DSOs,” explains Mr Schmitt. “We will release various applications on this environment. The basic requirements for developing new applications will be available mid-2018.
